Downtown
The Museum of Mississippi History and Mississippi Civil Rights Museum share a building west of the Capitol. Start here for the broadest historical foundation, and do not rush the civil-rights galleries into the final hour.
Civil rights
The modest ranch house in the Elraine subdivision was the Evers family home and the site of Medgar Evers's assassination in 1963. Interior access and ranger programming require current National Park Service guidance.
State government
The 1903 Beaux-Arts Capitol rises above landscaped grounds near downtown. Guided-tour availability, security procedures, legislative sessions, and public access can change; verify before arrival.
Literature
Welty lived and wrote in this Tudor Revival house for most of her life. The furnished rooms, books, photographs, and restored garden make the writer's Jackson tangible through guided visits.
Families and nature
Aquariums, native habitats, fossils, a greenhouse, and museum trails interpret Mississippi's landscapes and wildlife. The museum is a separate operation from LeFleur's Bluff State Park and Mayes Lake, which are temporarily closed because of flooding.
Art and food
Walk the commercial blocks around Duling Avenue and State Street for murals, galleries, music, coffee, barbecue, seafood, and independent businesses. Current events can change parking and street activity.
The Capitol district
The State Capitol, Old Capitol Museum, Governor's Mansion, and Two Mississippi Museums sit in the broader downtown landscape, but they do not share one schedule or security process. Choose the interiors that are open, then compare the 1903 Capitol, the older statehouse, the executive residence, and the modern museum campus.
Eudora Welty's Jackson
The Welty house preserves the rooms, books, art, correspondence, and garden associated with one of Mississippi's most important writers. After a guided visit, walk or drive through Belhaven to see the early-twentieth-century houses and live-oak streets surrounding her home.
LeFleur's Bluff
The Museum of Natural Science pairs aquariums and exhibits with wooded museum trails near the Pearl River. The state park and Mayes Lake operation are temporarily closed because of flooding, while the museum and Children's Museum publish their own hours; check each operator before attempting an outdoor visit.
